“This is the third year of the event and whilst participating team numbers are slightly down for 2019 we still have 14 teams across the 13 & Under, 17 & Under and Open Age categories.” Said Netball NT Executive Officer, Ian Harkness.
The annual competition was established and delivered by Netball NT to encourage participation of indigenous communities in sport and recreation.
“We are supported by the Confident Girls Foundation through Netball Australia, this partnership is pivotal in providing these opportunities for indigenous people to be involved in netball and will see teams hale from Kununurra, Katherine and Mataranka playing this year.” Said Harkness.
While players are competing on court, spectators can partake in a number of activities around the stadium which include an inflatable obstacle course, a photo booth and an art station hosted by contemporary indigenous artist Darlene Devery.
“We want spectators and players to remember what an incredible weekend it was and to encourage more participants in the years to follow. The best way for us to spread the word about the carnival to remote regions of the Northern Territory is by word of mouth, so it is important for us that we make it memorable.” Said Marketing Specialist, Dustie Tare.
The opening ceremony will be held at 9:00am on Saturday morning at Sitzler Netball Centre, inside the CDU Stadium, with matches to be played on Saturday and Sunday.
