Maningrida, an indigenous community with a population of just over 2,000 people hosted Netball Northern Territory (NNT) for a week in August as they delivered remote school programmes to over 100 participants.
“We were extremely privileged to have such great support from the community, with a number of volunteers helping us out through out the week and school teachers keen to see Netball take a more prominent role both in the community and the school.” Said NNT Northern Participation Officer, Gayle Nairn.
NNT delivered after school activities through a mixture of netball skills, drills and modified games with a focus on footwork, catching on the move and space awareness. A number of sessions were also allocated to the school during school hours to work with students during recess and PE classes.
“The programme was received very well by participants which has encouraged the community to participate in the 2021 Indigenous Netball Carnival.” Stated Nairn.
NNT’s Indigenous Netball Carnival is aimed at increasing participation of the Indigenous community in sport and recreation and will be held in May 2021 at the CDU Stadium.
